With palpation and ultrasound we can determine when is the best time to breed the mare. If the mare shows heat it is best to schedule an exam when she has been in heat for a few days.
We can breed mares with cooled semen shipped to us or with frozen semen stored in our tanks. For shipping it is best to select the stallion and complete their required paperwork and payment before checking the mare. The mare may need to be checked several times to determine the best time for a shipment, so she will usually stay at the clinic for several days. Semen is shipped by next day FedEX or in some cases to an airline counter (and is a considerable cost). Pregnancy success rate is about 75%
Frozen semen is stored in our liquid nitrogen tank until the mare is ready to breed. It is transported to us in a special shipping container (at considerable cost) or if local can be picked up in one of our tanks. The breeding time needs to be withing 6 hours of ovulation, so the mare stays with us. The frequent checking of the mare causes the cost to be much more than breeding with cooled semen. The success rate with frozen semen is variable between stallions, and the pregnancy rate is 50% if everything is ideal. Breeding with frozen semen is less successful and more expensive than breeding with cooled semen.

With ultrasound pregnancy can be detected as early as 14 days. We recommend checking the mare 16-18 days after last breeding date and again at 30 days. The first check allows us to manage a twin pregnancy to avoid a problem, or if the mare is found not pregnant it allows time to breed again. The 30 day check allows us to see a fetal heartbeat and confirm that the pregnancy is progressing. The later stages of pregnancy are confirmed by rectal palpation.

If a mare has not been able to get pregnant or carry a foal to term we can diagnose and treat some of the causes. Serial ultrasound exams allow us to ensure that the mare is cycling normally and will show abnormalities in the uterus such as fluid retention or cysts. Uterine cultures can identify infections and determine which antibiotics will be helpful. Uterine biopsy can further identify problems like inflammation and scar tissue.
Treatments include uterine flushing, caslick sutures and supplemental hormones.

We provide supervised foaling for mares and health checks for newborn foals. We use the Foal Alert transmitters on the mare to allow us to observe the foaling and assist if necessary. We then can ensure that the foal has the umbilicus treated and is up and nursing. We run a blood test to confirm that the foal got enough colostrum. We also make sure that the mare passes all of the placenta and that the foal passes the meconium.

We collect semen from stallions on a mount for breeding onsite or shipping.
We can store frozen semen in out liquid nitrogen tanks.
